A newer generation of low-flow flush toilets has been introduced by several manufacturers. In contrast to toilets built more than 30 years that use more than 5 gallons per flush, the current batch average 1.3 gallons per flush.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (serving one of India's largest cities) has installed water meters but denies that these will function to levy water taxes. Instead, contrary to earlier declarations, it now argues that the meters will be used to check wastage. Interestingly, the project was funded by the Asian Development Bank which prequalified enterprises for the loan if they agreed to use the meters to generate water bills.
A consortium including Citigroup has offered to buy British water company, the Kelda Group at a "hard to beat" premium. It is the third British water company in a month and a half to be involved in a merger and/or acquisition.
